SEVENTEEN

WEDNESDAY, 17 JULY

Matt had left home early, but not before ensuring that Dani was okay and she hadn’t had another nightmare. He arrived at the office before anyone else, but before he’d had time to sit down at his desk, the phone’s insistent ring cut through the quiet. ‘DS Price,’ he answered briskly.

‘Matt, it’s Roy,’ the desk sergeant said, a sense of urgency threading through the words. ‘We’ve got another body. A male, Craig Garland, was found at his home by his cleaner. A call came in earlier this morning, before I came on duty, and two officers were sent out to Madron. They’ve just reported in. From what they told me, it’s looking like the same MO as the previous two bodies.’

A cold, sickening fear crept through Matt’s veins. The nightmare scenario they’d desperately hoped to prevent had happened and they’d been helpless to stop it.

‘Thanks, Roy.’ The gears in his mind turned as he pieced together the scant information. How many more lives would be lost before they could stop this monster?

Without even bothering to hang up his jacket, he headed straight to Lauren’s office. He could see that she was there from the shadow through the glass. He tapped on the door and without waiting for a response, pushed it open.

‘Yes?’ Lauren said, her eyebrows raised in mild surprise at his abrupt entrance.

‘We’ve got another body, ma’am. Craig Garland. This time in our area. Madron. He was found by his cleaner. Same MO, I believe.’

Lauren tensed. ‘We expected it might go this way. But it doesn’t make it any easier. Have you told anybody else?’

‘Not yet, ma’am. I’m the only one here.’ Matt glanced at his watch. ‘It’s early for the cleaner to have arrived, discovered the body, and then phoned it in. She’d have had to have been there at least forty minutes ago, I’d have thought. That makes it seven. Do cleaners start that early?’

He’d never had a cleaner. When he’d suggested it to Leigh one time, prior to Dani being born, because they were both working full time, she’d dismissed the idea, saying she’d rather do it herself. She said she found it therapeutic.

‘We’ll find out more when we get there,’ Lauren said, bringing him back to the present. ‘Let’s go.’

He glanced back at the office and noticed Ellie heading to her desk.

‘I’ll ask Ellie to look into him, before we go.’

He returned to the office and headed to the officer’s desk.

‘Hi, Matt,’ Ellie said, as she hung her bag on the back of the chair and pulled the keyboard towards her.

‘Morning. We’ve got a third body, I’m afraid. Craig Garland, who lives in Madron. See what you can find out about him. When the others arrive, please ask them to start digging, too.’

‘What exactly shall I say to them?’ Ellie asked, a panicked expression crossing her face.

He’d forgotten how nervous she could get when dealing with people she didn’t know well.

‘Explain what’s happened, and that the DI and I have gone to the scene.
